Materials and preparation

Use the teacher preparation guide and the craft materials checklist. Make one example of each craft first so children can see the finished result.

How to use it

  1. Choose the life cycle that matches your season or unit, such as apples and pumpkins in fall or butterflies and frogs in spring.
  2. Introduce the vocabulary cards and sequence the stages together.
  3. Build the craft and the 3-way foldable.
  4. Practice with the matching, sorting and counting pages, or play the board game.
  5. Compare life cycles with the comparison chart and check learning with the review and assessment.

Classroom idea

Keep every finished craft on a “Living Things Change” bulletin board and add a new life cycle each season.

Adaptations

  • PreK: pre-cut the pieces and focus on sequencing and naming the stages.
  • 2nd grade: ask students to explain each stage in writing in their science notebooks.
  • Use the games and memory cards in science centers.
